Background of the study
Language identity is deeply intertwined with the morphological features that distinguish a language from others. In Igbo communities in Anambra, traditional morphological markers—such as specific affixes, reduplication patterns, and compound structures—serve as important symbols of cultural identity and social belonging. These markers not only signal in‐group membership but also act as repositories of historical and cultural meaning (Nwankwo, 2023). Over time, however, modern influences and language contact have led to shifts in the usage and perception of these markers. This study investigates how morphological markers contribute to the construction of language identity among Igbo speakers in Anambra by analyzing both formal and informal registers. Field data collected from community gatherings, storytelling sessions, and classroom interactions indicate that traditional markers are actively maintained in certain contexts while being downplayed in others. This variation suggests a complex negotiation between preserving heritage and adapting to external linguistic pressures (Okafor, 2024). In addition, the study explores the role of education, media exposure, and migration in shaping attitudes towards these markers. The findings will contribute to theoretical discussions on language identity and provide practical insights for language planning and revitalization efforts in Igbo communities (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite the acknowledged role of morphological markers in shaping language identity, there is limited empirical research on their specific function within Igbo communities in Anambra. Preliminary observations suggest that modern influences are altering traditional marker usage, yet systematic data on these shifts remain scarce (Nwankwo, 2023). This gap complicates efforts to formulate effective language policies and educational programs that can reinforce cultural identity. Without a clear understanding of how morphological markers are maintained or transformed, efforts to preserve linguistic heritage may be compromised. Consequently, it is imperative to investigate the interplay between traditional morphological practices and contemporary language use in order to inform language maintenance strategies (Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

To document the key morphological markers used in Igbo.

To analyze their role in expressing language identity.

To examine the impact of modern influences on these markers.

Research questions:

What morphological markers are central to Igbo language identity in Anambra?

How do these markers vary between traditional and modern contexts?

What factors influence the maintenance or alteration of these markers?

Research Hypotheses:

Traditional morphological markers significantly reinforce Igbo language identity.

Modern influences lead to measurable shifts in marker usage.

Educational and media exposure mediate these changes.

Significance of the study:
This study provides vital insights into the relationship between morphology and language identity among Igbo speakers. Its findings will guide educators, language planners, and cultural policymakers in devising strategies to preserve indigenous linguistic features, thereby strengthening cultural identity and social cohesion (Nwankwo, 2023; Eze, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study focuses exclusively on Igbo morphological markers in Anambra, examining both traditional and contemporary usage. It does not address phonological or syntactic aspects.

Definitions of terms:

Morphological Markers: Linguistic elements such as affixes and reduplication that indicate grammatical or semantic functions.

Language Identity: The sense of belonging to a linguistic community, often tied to cultural heritage.

Igbo: An indigenous language spoken in southeastern Nigeria.
